There's a guy on eBay I bought my pent4 from for $125, incl. shipping and insurance. He refurbishes old office pcs. Came loaded with windows, but not office; I got OpenOffice.org, which I like better, anyway. I'll put u in touch, when you're ready. Came w/mouse, kbd, too.

Bert Perchot (sp?) died last year while I was homeless, being robbed. He was Le Fantome on webtv. He owned zbox webhosting, designed for all platforms, incl. webtv.

Just when he died, my original domain, rriverstone dot com (don't click it) came due for renewal. I didn't receive notice and a Chinese person bought it, because it has so many, many links to it, all over the internet, and put Russian child porn on it. I'm an incest survivor, you know.

The new owner, another webtv person who runs another hosting place, Arbor Domains, bought out Bert's zbox from his wife, Roxy (whom I adore). He helped me get http://rogiriverstone.com and transfer all my data there. It's taking me way too long to rebuild everything. Plus, Steve put his own file manager on zbox, and I don't understand it, so it's taking me a long time to learn it. Add to that, I haven't done intensive html since I left webtv.

I was one of the hard-core webtv table artists. You know, that art that can only be seen on webt. I think it should have been exhibited in the Museum of Modern Art; it was a completely unique, digital art form.

I learned html because I kept seeing these interesting email signitures in our alt.discuss, fire walled groups. I finally found a tutorial FOR webtv and built massive signatures, that really pissed off computer users when i sent email! LOL. Took forever for THEM to load, though webtv users saw them instantly.

I don't understand PERL, CSS and some other coding, but I can copy and past JavaScript and Flash. Couldn't code it, though.

So, http;//rogiriverstone.com is full of old fashioned, typed-by-hand html coding with lots of bells and whistles. Makes for a clunky, slow-loading and confusing homepage, for computer users. So, I'm redesigning it.

I can still do table art, too. There are gradient graphics online i can use instead of the tags we used to use; just use image files, instead. I like to build machines with clickable links, mouseovers, etc.; toys people can play with. Here's the one of which i'm most proud, and u can c it on pc or webtv. Some radio producers are reminiscing on the phenomenal advances in digital memory over the past, few years. They, of course, all used PCs. I didn't start on the 'net with a PC. Here's my memory:

In 1998, I bought a WebTV http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MSN_TV

, mostly to help the kids in my "War Zone" neighborhood with their homework. While one could record briefly with an external microphone, the quality was terrible, although one could snag small wav and midi files from the 'net. I know a woman who COMPOSED music on a WebTV. But voice audio? Nope.

WebTV had virtually limitless memory, as we were on a network, and needed no real hard drive. But one could not up- or down-load anything.

Then, Microsoft bought it, cannibalized the hardware and it became X-box. Those of us still using the interactive television set-top box were neglected and ignored. They still exist, as broadband, television appliances, and are popular in hotels overseas, such as in Germany and Japan.

It was a brilliant idea that was neglected to death by Microsoft.

I never could have produced radio with one, but I had a nice following as a writer of "Surfaris" for Net4tv "Voice," an internet magazine for interactive television appliance users. http://www.net4tv.com/voice/

Dear Brian,

It is with much regret that I must request that I be unsubscribed from my charter membership to games4tv.com.

Brian, I don't want to put you in the middle of anything. But I will not continue contact with Laura, and I need to have someone unsubscribe me.

Laura told me once that you all can tell who has been on the site. It's obvious I haven't used it much recently.

It was flattering, to receive the membership. But my circumstances have changed, and I believe it is best if I discontinue the privilege. I feel very uncomfortable, accepting any free membership. And I can't justify the expense of subscribing myself. I tried to unsubscribe myself, so as not to bother any of you, but I can't figure out how I could do it.

I hope you are all well. I regret that I won't be continuing contact with you, Laura, Chai or the rest of the online "family." It was my sincere pleasure and privilege to work with you all, in happier times. Some of my fondest memories are of the net4tv gang, employees and users. I won't forget any of you. And I'm more grateful than I can express for the privilege of having worked for net4tv.

I wish all of you the best. You'll always be in my thoughts and good wishes for the rest of my life.

Take very good care of yourselves. And, as Jerry Springer says, of each other.

Using a Microphone with WebTV Plus®

If you have a WebTV Plus®, you may have noticed the word Recording onthe left sidebar of your e-mail "Write" screen. If you see "Recording"on the sidebar, you may have a microphone input jack on the back of your unit. This is where you plug in the mic. (My current WebTV unit is the Philips Magnavox® Model MAT972A101. The mic jack is located between the printer port and the double-row of audio/video inputs.)

Note: The original Sony® Plus units do not have the microphone jack. It is possible, however, to use the mic of a camcorder or portable cassette recorder to accomplish audio WAV recordings.

The newer-generation Sony Model No.INT-W250 units do have the mic jack. Any dynamic mic should work, but "computer" mics will not. I do not recommend RadioShack microphone #33-3025A. There is a very noticeable and annoying 'buzz' in the background of a recording made with that mic. Best Buy carries the Sony Dynamic Mic (model FV-100) for around $10. Both the Sony and PM come with a 9'-10' cord. Radio Shack has a very good mic; part #33-2001. It costs $9.95, and comes with a 6-1/2-foot cord.

I strongly recommend that you have the power to your WebTV set disconnected from the wall outlet before plugging the mic or its cord into the back of your unit. (However, once you have it plugged in, you may leave it that way indefinitely!)

Here's how to use the "Recording" feature. With the mic plugged in, go to Write, (an e-mail) and choose Recording on the sidebar. You will get a pop-up screen with the words Play, Stop, and Record. The words Add to Message will be in the upper right hand corner. Choose Record by placing your yellow highlight box over the word "Record". With your mic in hand, tap the Return key once to begin recording. When you are finished recording, you can use the left arrow key to place the yellow box over "Stop", and hit the Return key to stop recording. OR.... I have found that you can leave the yellow box over the word Record and simply hit Return a second time to stop the recording process. (You are allowed 30 seconds of recording time, and a countdown timer is displayed on-screen.)

When you have stopped recording, use the left arrow key to move the yellow box to Play. By tapping the Return key, you can listen to a playback of the recording you just made. If you are not satisfied with it, just go back to "Record" and hit Return key again to begin a new recording! When you are satisfied with your recording, choose Add to Message at the top right corner of the pop-up screen, and your recording will be processed and placed on your outgoing e-mail. You may, at this time, type the text of your e-mail, or you can make the recording after you have written the e-mail. The choice is yours. It will appear as a speaker on your outgoing e-mail, and the person who receives your e-mail can click onto the speaker, and hear the recording you made! In fact,you may click on the speaker and listen to the recording for yourself. One word of caution: most AOL® users and many other computer users cannot receive attachments in e-mail, and therefore, cannot see the speaker or click on to it.

A 30-second recording will take up approximately 7% of a WebTV® recipient's incoming storage capacity. Fourteen such recordings, mailed to one WebTV® user, could fill up their mailbox, even if it was empty to begin with. Use caution, so you don't fill up their mailbox!

Google groups & blogger logon

Ok, here's the problem. Google is now requiring a password to logon to
Groups & to Blogger. I can't do either from WebTV. I get redirected to
some junk about "cookies." They really mean my browser's too old. I've
tried every workaround I could. Mobile Google, source viewers to find
login links... you name it.

I've written half a dozen emails to both Google AND Blogger about this.
I can't write posts to my blog from Webtv and WebTV users can't post
comments. We can read the blog, though. But, since it's a blog about
MSNTV, it feels like cheating to write from a COMPUTER! LOL

I've made a workaround for posting from WebTV. I went in on the PC and
set the email posting device. I now have a blogger address to which I
can email posts which appear immediately in my blog.

This saves me a lot of hassle, as I was CCping everything I wrote in
alt.discuss & WebTV email and emailing it to my Hotmail account, so I
could CCp it again from the PC to post to blogger. See how complicated
that was?

But I couldn't have set up the email posting gismo without the pc.

How the heck are you accessing the Google groups from a webtv? or are
you?

Burying the lead here: does anybody know how to get past Google's
refusal to make login accessible to our dinosaurs? sigh.

MSN Companion 2.0, implemented in Compaq's IPaq, supports up to nine user profiles.

Microsoft has released MSN Companion 2.0, an update to its stand-alone appliance, which can now house Internet access profiles for up to nine users.

Companion 2.0 is a no-frills Internet access appliance, says Cory Curtis, a Microsoft spokesperson. MSN Companion 1.0 allowed the creation of only one profile.

"A user has to just plug the device into a phone line to connect to the Internet," he adds.

Compaq's iPaq appliance family, introduced last summer, is the first implementation of the initial MSN Companion. Compaq is now using MSN Companion technology in two new models--the IA-1 and IA-2. The IA-1 appliance, priced at $399, includes an LCD monitor, while the $299 IA-2 device comes with a CRT monitor. Both appliances have keyboards, a USB port, and modems, says David Albritton, a Compaq spokesperson.

The USB port enables the appliances to connect to secondary devices, which could let users create a home network, connect to external storage devices, or access a broadband Internet connection, Curtis says.

A stripped-down version of Windows CE designed to provide multiuser Internet access is built into the appliances, Curtis adds. Users connecting to the Internet using MSN Companion will get custom access to Microsoft's e-mail service Hotmail, business service Web site MoneyCentral, and instant messaging service MSN Messenger, he says.

File Sharing, Voice Support Added
The appliances let users share music files, and support voice communication over the Internet, Curtis says. Periodic software updates for the Companion service are downloaded from the Internet and installed automatically, he says.

MSN Companion was unveiled almost two years ago. MSN Companion 1.0 allowed a single user to connect to the Internet. Declining to give sales figures for the product, Curtis says MSN Companion 2.0 is a service upgrade to Companion 1.0.

The appliance is available directly from Compaq and from retailers nationwide, says Albritton of Compaq.

Also, Microsoft is offering six months of free Internet access through its MSN service as a bundle with new purchases of MSN Companion 2.0. At the end of six months, subscriptions cost $21.95 monthly. Users can cancel MSN's service and use an alternate ISP, but Microsoft will still charge a $9.95 monthly fee. The fee covers upkeep of the MSN Companion service, which includes software upgrades, Curtis says.

Lots of winter projects

My g/f & I are planning a 10-day trip, traveling the Santa Fe Trail from
here in Albuquerque all the way to Kansas City and back. We're shooting
video for an Independent Study project of hers at college. It'll be a
video documentary, based on a radio play she produced several years ago.

So, the truck needs cleaning out; bedding and cooking utensils need
washing; goats & chickens need extra feed (so do cats). Clothes need
packing; cameras need batteries, film, etc.

It's a lot of work. As usual, she can't help, because she works full
time and has other classes, too.

It's her last semester. She'll graduate, with honors, in May. Maybe then
I can fall apart! I've never known her without tremendous pressure on
her.

Besides all that, Dudette at http://net4tv.com Games has offered me a
job, writing about WebTV stuff for her users. I'll have a blog; it'll
have a forum, so readers can reply, etc. I'm also helping her set up
online greeting cards and email signatures.

So, I've been awful busy!

BTW: I'll be gone from the 9th through the 19th of February. We're
taking the WebTV and a small TV set with us. We'll periodically stay in
hotels. That way, we can post still photos online, check email, etc.
I'll try to post in my newsgroup and blogs then, but who knows?

Mostly, we'll be sleeping in the truck, on an air mattress, in February.
We go through Colorado, Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri and, of course, New
Mexico. Nothing like a camping trip, in the DEAD OF WINTER! brrr.

Here's my response:

Hi, Kcp,

I'm just a regular WebTV subscriber. I'm pretty sure WebTV's days are
numbered. So are a number of my acquaintances. We're trying to preserve
as much of WebTV's history and, particularly, its culture, as possible.

My primary focus is on culture: the users, who they are, what they've
done with the LBB (little, black box), the social connections we've
made, the websites we've built.

But I'm also interested in the history of the developers of the user
interface. You're one of them.

I stumbled into the underpinnings, behind the firewall at webtv. I
discovered CP. It's a website with the WebTV logo, made of claymation
modeling clay. It links to a "fortune cookie" website, and to a link
with some info about people and projects. I can't access most of it; my
browser's too funky on a webtv and I can't see the pages from a PC.

It LOOKS like CP might have been a fun, innovative and creative place to
work.

Now, I'm already on shaky ground, as I've been rummaging around in the
old WebTV closets, where I don't belong. I'm basically hacking (finding
out how stuff works), as opposed to cracking (malicious intent).

MSN won't tell us users anything. We're the most neglected IP
subscribers on the 'net.

So, from a Google search of "CP" +WebTV, I've discovered a little of the
background behind WebTV development.

And I found your resume`.

I'm building what amounts to a WebTV museum, at my own expense, as a
second domain. My primary domain is http://rriverstone.com where you can
investigate me in greater detail.

Anything you share with me will be held in strictest confidence. I have
a background in freelance journalism; I protect my sources.

I'm just curious about the personal experiences of the "old school"
WebTV people.

And I'm VERY curious about CP! It just looks interesting.

I doubt you ever saw the internet art we've made, utilizing audioscopes
and gradtable tags in HTML. We also experiment with PHP, CGI, Perl,
DHTML, CSS...whatever we can "tweak" to work on LBBs. It's unique art. I
hope to preserve it and exhibit it to the general public.

Mobile phone technology is impacting some sites, such as Google, to reduce the crap through which one must wade in order to access a URL.Hence, there are several new search engines, designed to make URLS easier for mobile phones.They REALLY help with webtv!

I have a stripped-down eBay tool and Netflix.Just above these, you'll see two links for google. The first is an easier-loading search engine. Then, once you find your URL, past it into the form field of the SECOND Google link I have on the page. It'll present you with a clean-as-a-whistle, fast-loading URL. It even works on complicated blog sites, with scads of links & photos.

I don't leave home without it!!

Focus on what's GOOD! When you see something interesting, read it,

Gates on ITV

This is a different platform than either internet or TV as they exist
today; it's rather a synthesis. It's not the same thing as what you are
describing.

Here's the news story I saw recently:

I heard Gates on Charlie Rose today. He wouldn't mention WebTV nor MSNTV
by names when he said [paraphrasing] "we had some experience with itv
several years ago." Charlie Rose chuckles, intimating that Gates has
complained about this to Rose, off camera.

He said the infrastructure: telephonic broadband, wireless, etc. weren't
in place then, and that's why these "experiments" were not successful on
a large enough scale (by MicroSoft's standards).

He's also very focused on the potentials of narrowcasting, rather than
broadcasting: targeted audiences.

Despite the fact that he didn't want to be associated in people's minds
with the names, WebTV or MSNTV, he DID SAY THIS:

[paraphrasing] People in the company have urged him to sell off the ITV
division of MicroSoft. They say it isn't making any money, that it isn't
advancing with current technologies, and that it's serving a VERY
LIMITED market.

To this, Gates' response is: we're keeping the ITV division,
essentially, until the last box dies.

Now, nobody else at MicroSoft sees the tremendous product loyalty WebTV
users have shown in the face of: corporate neglect, antiquated browsers,
hostility from PC users, website incompatibility, etc. But I infer from
Gates' statement that he recognizes it. I still don't like, respect or
trust the fellow, but I will give him that much.

Gates on ITV

I was watching an interview with Charlie Rose just now. Gates would NOT
mention WebTV, nor even MSNTV, by name. He said, basically, "we did some
work with itv about ten years ago, and it didn't work out. Some of my
people are advising me to dump that portion of microsoft, but I tell
them, 'no.'"

The gist of it is this: gates knows itv is the wave of the future, that
BROADcasting is outdated; that NARROWcasting is the future; that
broadband, wireless, ipod/zoon, cellular telephony, etc are going to
cause radical changes in how we receive information.

The MAIN reason, he suggested, that his "experiments in the past" with
ITV weren't successful is that broadband wasn't easily and universally
accessible for the set top appliance.

Basically, in addition to xbox & zoon, gates is saying he anticipates a
global revival in itv.

Keep your hat on.

Blogger used to be accessible to me on webtv. With Google IE 7.o
requirements, I can't post and webtvs can't reply to blogger posts. Our
browser is IE 3.0. I know. But we can't upgrade, and MSN has lost
interest in us.

I tried writing to your go@ address, to try a test post. No reply.

I'm SURE, with MINOR tweaking, your system can be revised so low-income
people on webtvs can blog!

WebTV subscribers are a resourceful lot, as we get little support from
MSN. We've discovered mobile eBay & mobile Google. They both work FAST
on webtv! Well, except I can't purchase a BuyItNow item.

I can promise product loyalty, if you can help us get access to blogger
and to Google groups, if you're able to direct me to the right people
there.

We're not thrilled about our antique browsers. We're just doin' the best
we can, dude!

alt.discuss.politics.conservative, but no .liberal. I felt that was out
of balance. Fortunately, enough voters, liberal and conservative,
agreed.

I had hoped people could actually examine ideas, really look at them and
discuss them.

Unfortunately, the toxins of alt.discuss have infested this spot, too.
My experience is that you don't want to discuss. You want to battle,
shock, insult.

If you use the tactics of your opponent, how are you any different FROM
your opponent? I was hoping to meet some people who could agree to
disagree without these silly flame wars.
I've posted many, thoughtful articles in here. They're buried now.
Nobody saw them. Nobody commented.
There seem to be neither conservatives nor liberals allowed in this ng.
It seems to be only for lamers.

I don't blame the "rednecks." They live in a toxic, abusive atmosphere,
where conformity to the Law of the Bully is their twisted and inaccurate
measure of "success." They have abusive: fathers, gods, ministers,
presidents and bosses; they don't know any better. They're castrated and
bitter.

They're sexually frustrated, emotionally insecure, poorly-educated,
insulated from the real world, wallowing in their middle class
privilege, smug and ignorant.

They delight in cruelty and pettiness. They don't care about -- and take
pride in -- inflicting suffering. And then, they'll call themselves,
"Christians." Their kind killed their so-called, "savior."

They'll never know what a joy life is.

As far as I'm concerned, they're a dying breed of psychological
cripples: gasping their last, fetid words; inflicting their final,
insipid damage; spreading the sickness in which they fester as best
their dried hearts can.

But I refuse to identify with someone who claims to be a "liberal," yet
resorts to the same tactics.

I have my own damage (as do they), thank you, which I must work (unlike
they) hard, every hour, to overcome. I'm tempted to act like them, sure,
and I have.

But, while it offers a temporary release from the pain, it doesn't heal
me. What I need is a conversation, based on logic, sincere concern for
human dignity, and actual knowledge of the issues.

I seldom see that in here. I certainly don't see it from these
reactionary bigots. But I also don't see it from you.

So, I must assume that you're only here for a flame war.
I feel more betrayed by you than by them.

The Internet is set to revolutionize television within five years, due to an explosion of online video content and the merging of PCs and TV sets, Microsoft chairman Bill Gates said on Saturday.

"I'm stunned how people aren't seeing that with TV, in five years from now, people will laugh at what we've had," he told business leaders and politicians at the World Economic Forum.

The rise of high-speed Internet and the popularity of video sites like Google Inc.'s YouTube has already led to a worldwide decline in the number hours spent by young people in front of a TV set.

In the years ahead, more and more viewers will hanker after the flexibility offered by online video and abandon conventional broadcast television, with its fixed program slots and advertisements that interrupt shows, Gates said.

"Certain things like elections or the Olympics really point out how TV is terrible. You have to wait for the guy to talk about the thing you care about or you miss the event and want to go back and see it," he said.
"Internet presentation of these things is vastly superior."

At the moment, watching video clips on a computer is a separate experience from watching sitcoms or documentaries on television.

But convergence is coming, posing new challenges for TV companies and advertisers.

"Because TV is moving into being delivered over the Internet -- and some of the big phone companies are building up the infrastructure for that -- you're going to have that experience all together," Gates said.
YouTube co-founder Chad Hurley said the impact on advertising would be profound, with the future promising far more targeted ads tailored to each viewer's profile.

"In the coming months we're going to do experiments to see how people interact with these ads to build an effective model that works for advertisers and works for users," he said.

Advertisers are already racing to adapt their strategies to the growing power of the Web, and more and more promotional cash is tipped to migrate from television to Web sites in future.

I'm very lucky. I have access to a WebTV PM+ and several computers,
including a mac powerbook. Our house is wired with DSL (mostly to keep
down the bickering about who gets to be online NOW!).
So, when I get frustrated with trying to surf on an antique browser, I
just reach for a computer, while the WebTV's online, and do what I need
to do.

I believe WebTV, in its current form, can't last much longer. Too many
sites are inaccessible now (I'm the one who can't write my blog from my
lbb & my webbie readers can't post comments, 'tho we can all read the
blog from LBBs).

Here's why we ol' school webbies hang on: community.

Have you ever tried to locate a MSN group? Their "search this site"
loads results that aren't groups! It's frustrating and aggrevating to
look for a topic (in my most recent searches, "Burning Man" & "WebTV")
and get thousands of irrelevent results! I still don't know if they have
any (of hundreds of thousands of groups) WebTV MSN Groups!
The internet is a lonely place. Oh, sure, there are millions of
websites. One day's worth of youtube would take an entire lifetime to
watch!

But WebTV had chats. We have, although they're officially "not supported
by MSN anymore" (1 800 GOWEBTV CSR), alt.discuss, what's left of it.
We found each other. We built communities together. We met and got
married in chat rooms. We taught each other html, javascript, php,
dhtml, CSS, Imaps, ming.

Now that many of us have moved on to computers, we've tried to establish
forums, chat groups, etc. But we're scattering to the winds. Old links
don't work. The alt.discuss.memorials.webtv newsgroup is full of grief.
I visit some of the forums. I frequently see posts that say, "I miss my
WebTV!"

No, they miss our Family. They miss having people to answer questions,
support our struggles to learn how to optimize our online experiences.
They miss the corny esigs and the bad jokes.

On a computer, I'm completely responsible for everything the appliance
does. If I don't have good antivirus, if there's a sudden power surge or
static charge, if I open the wrong attachment, if I didn't install a
plug in or some soft- or hardware.... I could end up in big trouble.
It's my job to learn all that or pay someone who already knows it to do
it for me. It's lonely and frightening. It all sounds so foreign and
unattainable.

Some of us have real reasons why we won't learn all that and can't pay
someone to do it for us.

One thing I really love about WebTV is that it's accessible. Twenty +
bucks a month isn't chicken feed for some of us. But the appliance was
accessible and replaceable. And we didn't need to be techies. We took it
out of the box, plugged it in, and it walked us through.

We are and were taxi drivers, waitresses, disabled, elderly, janitors...
And we learned to build web pages, even ART web pages. We started
hosting businesses and became webmasters. We began broadcasting our own,
home grown media. The technology was accessible.

That's what those of us who've "moved on" miss about WebTV. WE are the
LBB. We miss ourselves and each other.

WebTV was a singular phenomenon. I don't think anything like it will
happen again, not in my life time, anyway.

I'm proud and humbled to have been here for most of it. I've made
lifetime friends. It's not the appliance; it's the community.

IRC: Internet Relay Chat
It's a format by which WebTV can easily link to real-time chat rooms.
Everybody types into the room, the text scrolls up. You get to have
real-time conversations with people.

afternoon http://chat4tv.com chat. It's a bunch of friends, hanging
out,
telling stories. We've been together about 10 years now. People have
actually gotten MARRIED in our chat rooms! Businesses have formed.

celebrated births and mourned deaths.
Chat4tv is owned by Laura Buddine, a pioneer in research on interactive
television (webtv and other platforms), where people connect to the
internet via their television sets.
Laura, or Dudette, as we call her, also owns and operates
http://net4tv.com which is a multitude of resources, including image
manipulation, sound files, people of color American History, and a
wonderful internet magazine called, "Net4tv Voice," for which I wrote
articles for several years.
In the last, several years, she has expanded yet another venture,
http://games4tv.com : a source of online games. She works diligently to
make these accessible to all platforms: webtv, webtv plus, msntv2,
computers, macs & apples. They also work for several, international set
top boxes, designed for cable tvs, particularly in hotel chains around
the world.
Sunday evenings, we chat from 3pm, pacific time, until about 6 or 7pm,
depending on who wants to stick around. We have a trivia game every
week. We talk about what's new in technological innovation, the impact
of it on culture, etc. It's pretty much everything, from geek to greek.
If you ever feel like meeting some of the NICEST people who ever owned
a
webtv, you could pop in one weekend. Some of these people have done
phenomenally innovative stuff, all of which they learned as regular
subscribers, not as corporate types with degrees in the field.

They've "upgraded" http://blogger.com and http://blogspot.com since
Google took over. You need a Google password to get in to blog.
Well, it's not, of course, compatible with the webtv browser. Ppl can
still READ my blog from a webtv, but can't post comments. I can't log
in
from a webtv anymore.
I have to write a blog about webtv from a COMPUTER?!?!
I wrote several emails to Google over the weekend; we'll see if I get a
response from a human, not a bot. I'm going to CALL Google today, but
I'm not too hopeful.

Yahoo Shortcuts/Blank Page Problem fix
new yahoo shortcut ad appears on top of page causing a
blank screen. I've only seen the problem come up on
one of my accounts once. So far I've been trying to
get the blank screen back so I can test solutions out.
So I can only tell you what worked for me.

to the old version before using, but I don't think if

Larry, I'm sorry. I don't know a good way to get around this junk withYahoo.Yahoo automatically suspends or deletes email accounts for inactivityafter a certain number of days. They don't CARE that you're the ownerof, or poster to, various Yahoo groups, even though they use your@yahoo.com address to allow you to post! But they'll suspend yourowner/moderator privileges in a heart beat!You probably haven't been "banned" for violation of their Terms ofService. Of course, I don't KNOW you, but you don't seem like aterrorist, spammer, pedophile or other reprobate to me! You're probablycut off because you weren't using your yahoo mail in the required time.It's an automatic program Yahoo has. No work around.One thing I'd suggest is trying to restore the old email address byre-sign up. It probably won't work, as your yahoo addy is listed in thegroups. I wrote a private email to a woman in the tablesnscopes group. She found it necessary to send it to the owner of the group. I'm not posting their emails here, only my own correspondence.

Are you intentionally pushing other threads up, to bury my submission

the stained glass challenge?

It's the 2nd day in a row you've pushed things up, w/out acknowledging
my submission.

I've seen no feedback on my submission from you in the ng. You've
replied to every other entry, as near as I can tell, except mine.

Have I offended you?

The problem is that I think I've offended you. It seems I have, but I'm
not sure why. And the problem is that it appears you might be
intentionally burying my submission.

I'm just checking this out by asking. I don't want bad feelings between
us. And I was discouraged to see my submission buried.

As to giving feedback to others, I was waiting (probably pointlessly,
seeing how busy the ng is) for stuff to "die down." Whenever there's a
roll call thread in a group, it's usually best -- in my experience --
to
let that fill up first. Then, I go thru the posts and read stuff. Then,
I reply.

I meant no disrespect by doing this. Truly.

Roll call threads get very long and pop back up to the top very
frequently. Lots of stuff gets pushed down. Once everyone has replied
to
the roll call thread, it's usually safe to resume "business as usual."

I can't tell, in a vacuum, what's going on with anybody. It has been my
experience that it's best if I just ask questions, when I don't know
what's going on. I don't mean anything aggressive or hostile by it, I'm
just looking for some clarity.

I was disappointed and, naturally, frustrated, that my work was
repeatedly disappearing. I was asking to be sure you weren't
intentionally burying it, for some reason. And, if you are, to ask you
why, so I'll know what's expected of me.

Also, since you seem to be the archivist for Tandem Tables, it's more
likely my work could be included there if you actually get to see it.

I don't want bad blood between us. I'm not accusing you, really. I'm
just asking what's going on, so I'll know how to participate in the ng.

Charters are difficult to access. I posted mine on a regular basis in

forgotten much. Despite your comments re: my intelligence and what you
perceive as my "acting other than," I have serious issues with memory.

former experiences on webtv. I'm trying to reconnect and relearn

You seem to have come to some pretty harsh conclusions re: my
motivations. My stance is that you are mistaken.

I hesitate to state this, as I'm afraid it will be perceived, by those
who may be looking for "evidence" against me, that I'm soliciting pity.

It is suspected that I live with brain damage, caused by severe child
abuse. My memory is VERY faulty. I am mildly dyslexic. I have
difficulties interfacing in social situations.

But NOTHING I have done --or not done-- in this newsgroup has been of
malicious intent. I am TRYING to succeed.

I need to receive a bit of respect and maybe more patience than is
possible.

I stand by my reasons for not posting more in the group. I'm not lying.
I'm not making lame excuses.

Is there anyway we can solve this, or am I persona non grata, no matter
what I try to do to improve things?

The video projector connects to our vcr/dvd machine.It also has hookups
for computers. It also has external audio outputs. I'm running it
through a large boombox as an amp, which sends the audio, with full
dynamic range, through a pair of stereo speakers behind the projection
screen.

Depending on who arranged the midi files, they can sound incredibly
vivid. And the digital/ synthy sound of midis CAN compliment the art.
It's a virtual reality; it doesn't have to sound like an acoustic
orchestra. One webber, jsteinmetz, actually managed to COMPOSE midis
using only her webtv!! amazing!

Here's an example of a midi that's FABULOUS with Tom's "magic" art:

On our stereo, it's magnificent.

Here's another plus to this projector: I can record video onto either
vhs tape or midi dv (through my very cheap, digital movie camera).

CAN be uploaded on the net, via computer, in a language computers can
SEE!

I'm thinking the mathematics, requisite precision and patience involved
in code art may be beyond some people's abilities or time limitations.
Hence, this interest in image manipulation: it gets done faster and
it's
pretty. I guess.

If I were to do image art, I'd manipulate my own creations. Either I'd
take jpegs and post em online, or I'd use a computer software program,
create art from scratch and then manipulate it at IM.

I'm much more interested in taking raw code and creating something
completely virtual. Even though it's really hard, tedious work that's
prone to BAD mistakes.

The exhibit would involve video projections of code art pages, direct
off the net or videotaped for replay.

I have a video projector. We bought it, used, on eBay, for apx $250.oo.
We're watching "Finding Nemo" on it right now on a 3.5 x 5 -foot
screen.
The image could be even larger, if the projector were farther from the
screen.

You should see table and scope art on a screen that big! It's fabulous.

If it were an interactive exhibit, people could mouseover, click on
different pages, etc. It could be fabulous, I think.

It's modern, digital art. It deserves preservation and exhibition.

When flame wars happen in a ng, I get very quiet. I wait for it to blow over. If it doesn't, I leave.

I go to quite a large and far-flung number of alt.discuss ngs, from atheism to zoology. Aside from the occasional "troll:" some lost soul, looking for attention, no major flame wars errupt. Not even in in the alt.discuss.politics.liberal ng! And it's not a club!

I've been called all sorts of names, accused of the weirdest junk, been email bombed, had my web site copied, had my EMPLOYER contacted re: the content of some of my writings, been accused of "whining" when my oldest friend died, etc. I've even been called a crack addict!

Still, after about five years online, for the MOST part, I've been pretty well left alone. Part of that is because I'll leave, rather than listen to abuse.

I agree, there's a lot of nasty, childish behavior online, by MSNTV users. But it's nothing compared to what happens outside of alt.discuss.

I rarely post outside alt.discuss for that reason.

By the way, if you want to post spam-free outside alt.discuss, I've found a way.

Don't use the discuss platform provided by MSNTV.

Go into another of your usernames which doesn't require email. Have the email priviledges turned ON.

Go to Google Groups http://www.google.com/grphp?hl=en&tab=wg&ie=UTF-8. Sign up for as many of the discussions as you wish.

Switch to primary user; turn off email priviledges for that 2nd user.

Now, any time you wish to visit a Google Group, simply sign on at Google with that secondary user's address, but do it from your primary user name, with that secondary user's email turned off.

You can post any and everywhere in the Google groups and nobody can spam or email bomb that secondary user!

Since Google groups contain all of alt., rec., soc., etc, you have complete freedom to post without the nasty reprocussions of not being able to hide your email address!

Image Magick Composite Trouble!

Here's what I had to do to composite an image yesterday.

Take Image A to IM; place Image B on top; adjust parameters.

If not correct position, switch users.

Come BACK to IM and repeat, changing parameters.

I kept both images and IM in my email in-box, for quick access.

The problem SEEMS to be with our caches, not with IM.

I see problems elsewhere online with the cache lately. My "recents" don't show the page I'm on until it's completely loaded; my "recents" misses pages; my "back" button isn't working properly, particularly on cookied sites; etc.

It appears to be an MSNTV bug, not a fault with IM. But, if the MSNTV has permanently changed, the IM hosts might want to know, so they can script work arounds, if that's permitted by the originator of the script.

After twenty tries, switching users, I finally compositted my image!

I had a FEW problems with annotating, too, but was able to hit the "back" key pretty regularly and finish without switching users more than twice for two annotations.

It's very frustrating, but composing can be done this way.

It's not a "time out" problem; it's not a problem with the images. It's a problem with how MSNTV is accessing the IMs, I believe.

I REALLY wanted my Saddam Claus on Sunday, the DAY he was captured, so I was HIGHLY motivated to go through the hassle of switching users a bazillion times to finish him! LOL

Normally, I don't composite much. I have an annotate on my home page at http://rriverstone.com but even that is exceptional use of IM for me.

Annotate is a bit finicky as well these days. And I have the phantom picture problem as well.

They've done something to MSNTV "guts" recently; that's all I can figure, since users are reporting this problem across the board at all IMs. It's a cache thing, I think.

as I said in my post, this is occurring in all the IMs.

And even users who work incredibly quickly are having this problem, the first time they hit their "back" buttons.

It is not a "time out" problem.

On this date, Manny removed the Logging Script which he had on the
T/L2 Forum. I will continue to monitor the situation, but still advise any WebTv'ers to change not only their T/L2 password(s) but also any other passwords for other sites which may be present in your T/L2 FTP or Mail Server settings.

I didn't like it. I resent people cursing at me. A subject is visible to everybody who enters the group. But that's neither here nor there.

He asked us what we thought of our First Ammendment rights being taken away by MSNTV.

Here's my reply:

Well, under the TOS, certain language is not allowed. Whether or not I agree with this, it's not my bandwidth.

Technically, I suppose, it IS my bandwidth, as I'm PAYING premium ISP fees for it. But I agreed to the TOS implicitly when I decided to use alt.discuss.

Now, these TOS terms are used by subscribers to MSNTV as tools for abusing other subscribers with whom they disagree.

I, for example, could get Naval in trouble by reporting him to MSNTV for violating the TOS with his foul language. I couldn't do it on my own, however; I'd have to campaign among my msntv friends and cronies and get THEM to complain, too. MSNTV won't listen to one malcontent; they'll only act when an organized protest erupts.

So, let me congratulate you on being perceived as such a threat to the "sacrosanct" reactionary movement that they've chosen to target you!

I have used the very word you've mentioned in ONE, very angry and hurt post I made during a personal crisis to which my fellow posters were, at best, indifferent and, at worst, abusive. Nothing happened to me. I used the word in my own newsgroup, in the body of the post, not the subject.

Free speech doesn't exist in the private sector. It only exists in public venues and is under attack, even there.

The reactionary wrong is using every resource they can ferret out to silence us. That's a fact: an ugly, frightening, discouraging, overwhelming FACT!

We must prepare ourselves to meet this threat. None of us is safe.

It is our responsibility to comport ourselves as cleverly, as diligently, as assertively as we can in the midsts of hair-splitters and bean counters.

Just look at Queer rights, civil rights and other, marginalized groups who've had to work twice as hard to get half as much as anybody else. No, it's not fair. No, it's not right. But it's real.

Four hundred women in Afghanistan are on a waiting list in Kahbul right now, simply to attend beauty school. Is this revolutionary? By my USA standards, it's darn near reactionary!

But women who've been locked in their homes alone, depressed and isolated are now earning forty dollars a week as a result. The average income in Afghanistan is thirty dollars a MONTH!

And these women, while finally wearing makeup and fixing their hair, STILL wear burkhas in public! It hasn't been that long since their fingers could be cut off for wearing nail polish, and the Taliban is reviving itself.

It is my duty, as a commited liberal and social justice activist, to SPEAK for those who cannot speak! I've been speaking up for Afghani women's rights for nearly a full DECADE before the current administration "discovered" feminism as a public relations tool in its so-called "war on terrorism."

So, while I TRULY understand your frustration at being reported for a Terms of Service violation, I must admonish ALL of us who are progressive, who think and live "outside the box (multiple meanings intended)," who listen to other than talk radio, who have committed ourselves to social justice and liberal values, I MUST admonish all of us to KNOW the Terms of Service and to comply with them in EVERY POSSIBLE WAY!

The small, the scared, the lemmings, the witch burners, the paranoid, the self righteous, the unAmerican jackboot dittohead reactionaries who are running rampant across our country and within alt.discuss will use ANY MEANS NECESSARY to silence us.

Now, more than ever, we owe it to our bleeding nation to not be silenced! It's our patriotic duty!

If ONLY... we webbies are so familiar with this phrase, it might as well be the brand name of MSNTV!

Perlman's a genius. Or, at least, he was a real breath of fresh air, when he came up with WebTV.

But If ONLY this new appliance had come out before everybody else was already on the same track!

Anyway, Interactive TV isn't dead, just languishing, and only temporarily.

Phone companies are scrambling. Under pressure from competition from cell phones and computer telephoning, phone companies are heaving under the weight of their own infrastructures. Those infrastructures depended on phone companies' maintaining control of almost 100% of the phone customer base. Less customers than that, and the phone companies bleed money.

So, don't dispair; Interactive Television is the Next Thing the phone companies are investigating.

When it launched two years ago at CES, Moxi was a revolutionary concept. But now, after a change of ownership, it's just another HDTV DVR. The finalized Moxi-based box from Motorola, called "Broadband Media Center" (BMC9012), includes two HDTV tuners. It can simultaneously record two shows to its 80 gigabyte hard drive, which stores around 9 hours of HDTV content.

The Moxi is built on an x86 platform, runs Linux, and, in addition to playing back HDTV and regular TV, will also support digital music and photos – although Motorola was not demonstrating those capabilities. Oddly enough for such a brawny box (about twice the size of Scientific Atlanta's 8300), it includes no PC connectivity. A DOCSIS cable modem is included, which allows it to provide IP service to other computers in the house via the built-in Ethernet port.

When WebTV founder Steve Pearlman rolled Moxi out, he made a big deal about its ability to support satellite clients over 802.11a. These lightweight clients were supposed to extend the Moxi out to two other rooms. Sadly, Motorola's initial Moxi implementation does not include support for satellite clients. Scientific Atlanta, on the other hand, seems to have provided an elegant solution.

Man, after the Anthony Chu bull crud, you'd have thought this outfit would have tap danced 'til their shoes smoked to reestablish trust with its clients! WRONG!

For the last several weeks I have noticed that Manny at the T/L2 Forum is using a logging script to capture User Information and particularly the pages in your HISTORY. Note, if you go to the forum without logging out of your site the timestamped login information will be present in history and the logger would allow someone to use that information to gain access into your file manager and open your account information to see your password for future use. If you have visited the forums, it is advised that you change your passord ASAP.
Below is a copy of the script included in a message I forwarded to Tyhart.

just tried to acces the new "improved" zap2it tv listings for msntv classic.

a little, grey window thing popped up and asked me if I'd participate in a survey. It was some sort of dhtml or javascript window thing, with 2 radio buttons, one for yes and one for no.

I clicked, "yes," I'd participate in the survey. The window disappeared and I went to the tv listings. hmmmm

No survey. Hit "back," which, of course, did nothing helpful.

Now, this window said it was FROM MSNTV. But it doesn't work on an MSNTV browser? Ok.

last night....I am just getting started, this morning.

I would click an "enter" or "submit" button, etc., and nothing would happen! The yellow box around the link would sometimes turn green, sometimes not.

The box wasn't "frozen;" I could press my "home" button, etc., and those would work.

But the buttons around form fields wouldn't work. It was, I believe, a "cookie drop." The sites didn't know who I was and were searching frantically to try to answer my commands, but weren't getting any info from me. I can't use a filemanager, for instance, if my cookies don't show I know the password!

They're up to something at MSNTV tech. WE don't get to know what it is, of course, because we're just the subscribers.

Has all the symptoms ...groan... of an "upgrade."

I got a JOB from my MSNTV! Most of the articles posted here: Rogi Writes cost Net4TV Voice $25 each! I'd have done it for free, of course, because it was so much FUN! And Dudette KNOWS it! LOL...

But, when the dot coms crashed, she had to stop publishing, because investors were timid. sigh....

I have a puter; I FOUND IT IN A DUMPSTER! whoo hoo! it came with all the connections, speakers, a microphone, keyboard, games cdroms and some other stuff. I dragged it home in my cart. Dudette sent me a modem, but it was only 28k, and sooooo slow! I was on One Plan for awhile, but finally gave up on the puter, cuz MSNTV was so much faster, easier, less hostile, and familiar. Then, apparantly, a cat walked across the kbd or something, and some of the Windows95 files with which it came loaded got deleted or corrupted or something. So, it sits under my living room table, collecting dust.

Recently, I bought a gas powered scooter from eBay for less than two hundred dollars, including shipping. It's got a flat tire right now, but I can get a new one from eBay, as soon as I save enough money. The scooter means I can go out at night, drag home groceries in the trailer I fashoned for it, save bus fare, not wear out my legs, look for an offline job, and have a social life! I couldn't go ANYWHERE at night for ten years! I haven't been able to go anywhere since Wednesday this week, because the busses didn't run Thursday or Friday.

I couldn't buy a gas powered scooter in this town for under EIGHT HUNDRED DOLLARS! except a junky, little toy Pep Boys is selling for xmas!

And there are whole websites that teach me how to repair the scooter, my washingmachine (also trash), etc.

I REFUSE to sit up here in this slum, isolated, and act like a dang victim, just because it makes the smug feel comfortable!

Here are the Rio Grande Public Library Rules and Regulations for Computer Use.

One can only access a library computer for three hours per day, based on availability. If all computers are occupied, one must sign up to a waiting list.

One may not attach any hardware to a public library computer. This includes scanners and printers. Therefore, one is required to pay $0.15 per print out page of internet web sites.

A bus transfer in Albuquerque, NM costs $1.00 and is only good for two hours.

To use the library computers every week day for three hours, here's what I'd pay per month.

$40.00 bus fare

If I print out only ten pages per week, I'd pay an additional $6.00 for printing.

I could hand-copy everything, but that would use up my computer time, writing everything down.

If I require child care at, say $5.00 per hour, that would be an additional fifteen dollars per day.

In addition, there's the travel time, to and from the library. Only ONE library, the main branch, downtown, is directly in front of a bus stop. Most others are a three-block, minimum, walk from the nearest bus stop. Temperatures in Albuquerque range from over 100 degrees farenheit on summer days to well below freezing on winter nights. This makes the trip quite stressful for some of us who are disabled.

In addition to all this, factor in the fact that MOST poor people have JOBS. Many of us also have family members for which we care, such as children and elderly or disabled relatives.

Factor in the travel time to and from work, because the jobs are rarely in the low-income housing areas of town, and that eats up at least an hour or two per day. Many busses in Albuquerque only run every twenty, forty or sixty minutes.

So, in order for a working mother to access the "free" library computers five days a week her day would run a minimum of fourteen hours. And that doesn't include taking care of children, cleaning, cooking, running other errands, etc.

And it would cost her a minimum of forty dollars' bus fare per month.

She couldn't: cook, supervise her kids, sit in a bed to rest her aching feet, keep an eye on grandma, run a load of laundry, help with homework or lounge around in her underwear after a hard day's work on a public computer, either!

Marketing to the Poor

well, people market to the poor, all the time: rent-to-own furniture, predatory lending and "check cashing" and "credit counselling," death insurance, lotteries, discount stores, etc. There's more advertising for alcohol, tobacco and lottery tickets in low-income neighborhoods than elsewhere, too.

Exploiting the poor is an old tradition in capitalism.

There are cheap clothes, cheap cell phones and other electronics, cheap cars, generic foods and drugs, cheap shoes: made by Chinese prisoners and third-world sweatshops. Wal*mart, the world's largest retailer, is FOUNDED on these.

I just heard a "tutorial on tv buying" on NPR's Morning Edition today. According to them, only about 2% of the "big box" stores' sales is in HDTV and plasma tvs. So, 98% of television sales are not high-end products. Parenthetically, Wal*mart was advertising a small, color tv with built-in DVD player for less than $130 for today's after Thanksgiving early sale. I'm reasonably sure it wasn't manufactured in the USA, nor by union workers.

So, the price of the appliance doesn't seem to be a major issue.

MSNTV is an enhancement to computer use, too, as shown by the popularity of the MSN One Plan, which allows multiple MSNTV units to be used in conjunction with computer use in a single household.

MSNTV could be marketed that way. Electronics stores sell all kinds of things besides the hardware for computer use: software, add ons, etc. Having an MSNTV box near the hard drives would be extra sales, not less money.

People could buy them for their kids! They've got surf control and password protections, they allow for up to six users, etc. And Grandma could have an account, too, without having to learn software.

Nope, I really don't think it's the price of the appliance; X Box is selling just fine, thank you, and its guts are WebTV.

The fault is in the marketing, not in the hardware.

I go without some basics in order to be online with my MSNTV. If someone hadn't thrown out ten, brand-new pairs of sweat pants in the dumpster down the alley from my place, for instance, I wouldn't have any sweatpants to wear right now. I dumpster dive, to keep from needing to buy stuff.

I paid for my MSNTV by selling loot I dived from the dumpster.

My neighbors in the "War Zone" throw away small fortunes, renting movies, getting drunk, paying for cable and otherwise trying to entertain themselves, to relieve the monotonous depression of being trapped in poverty.

It's hard for me to get to libraries, concerts, lectures, etc. on the bus. It's hard for me to get to the local Flea Market, to sell my arts and crafts.

So, I do these things on the 'net.

People ask me, all the time, "if you're so poor, how come you're online?"

Because I need to research stuff, like medical care, repairs, legal info, consumer info, etc. Because I need to participate in life, not be held hostage by my poverty and forced into the solitary confinement of being a shut in in a slum.

How can I afford NOT to be online???
It's one of the main reasons I'm frustrated by MSNTV's indifference to its own product and subscribers.

If my neighbors all knew about MSNTV, maybe their kids would have options besides drug and alcohol abuse for amusement, teen pregnancy, violence and criminal behavior. Maybe some of them could make it to college!

People act like MSNTV is a toy. Well, for me, it's a lifeline.

I'm trying to show samples of what I'm able to do with web site building, so maybe some sucker, uh, customer, will hire me.

I swiped this idea from somebody a loooong time ago. I can't remember who. HMS56 knows, but he won't tell me.

I gussied it up a bit and added some junk, but basically it's all a stolen idea.

But it's a good thing I did it, because the original phony status board seems to have bitten the dust. I can't find it anywhere!

WHat was broken was the javascript on the "done" button. It would only produce the first pop up in the sequence.

I finally found a script, after looking for a couple of hours, and fixing it my way for at LEAST another hour.

It was a pain in the garbanzos, believe me.

But the more I put out there, that people might actually post around the internet, the more likely someone will stumble across me and PAY ME for how not stupid I am! LOL

NOVEMBER 14, 2003 ( IDG NEWS SERVICE ) - A new e-mail worm is spreading on the Internet and posing as a message from PayPal Inc., the online payment company, in an effort to harvest credit card numbers and account passwords, leading antivirus companies warned today. W32/Mimail-I is a new version of the Mimail worm, which first appeared in August, and is believed to be the first e-mail worm specifically designed to steal personal financial and account information, an online crime known as phishing.

Mimail-I first appeared late yesterday in what antivirus experts believe was a massive e-mail "seeding," in which spam programs are used to distribute messages containing the virus attachment, according to Craig Schmugar, a virus research engineer at McAfee Anti-Virus Emergency Response Team, or AVERT, which is part of Network Associates Inc. Like earlier editions of Mimail, the I-variant can also spread by itself. The worm contains its own SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) e-mail engine and harvests e-mail addresses from victims' computers, Schmugar said.
Unlike earlier versions of Mimail, the new variant contains a message that tells recipients that their PayPal account will soon expire and that they need to re-enter their credit card information through "our secure application," referring to the executable file attached to the e-mail message

I wrote this to a yahoo group, primarily computer users, about three years ago:

I was assuming the Yahoo group would continue?

Webmasters use different forms of codes when they build sites. Computers can, theoretically at least, download software and/or upgrade browser functions
to cope with these (e.g.: ever been to a site that requests you download RealAudio or Flash?).

Webtv has no capacity to upload/download on the users' side. We can only do whatever MicroSoft gives us to do. New software is distributed by means of "upgrades," periodically. These have, in recent history, been extrememly problematic: releasing features some of us don't need (mp3, InstantMessenger) and have also unleashed frustrating bugs.

One of the worst bugs has been a "cookie dump." It prohibits cookied sites from recognizing our browsers...even sites for which we've signed up and have pass words. Another bug is a JavaScript bug which prevents us from "seeing" JS coding. But this second one is "curable" by reloading (our word for "refresh").

Our little set top boxes have small memories, compared to most modern computers. They can only store so many "gadgets." Fortunately, most of the burden is taken up by our network servers. Another benefit to this is that we never pick up viruses.

I recently hooked up a PC I found last year in the trash to the internet. I hate it. It's impersonal, stubborn, inigmatic, tempramental. I'm always afraid
I'll sneeze and delete some essential file.
I'm afraid of sites online which might contaminnate it. It's a much more awkward medium for me. I have serious memory issues and, learning a new "language" at the age of 45, with Multiple Sclerosis, is very daunting, to say the least.

So I tend to correspond by WebTV rather than puter.

Piss Off Puters With Giant Images!

PLEASE accept my most humble apologies for the massive image you encountered on my web site, http://rriverstone.com!

This is one of the weird things about being on MSNTV. That image loads in less than 10 seconds for me. It's because I'm on a network, and have all the force and power of Billy Gates' toys to pass a melon through the eye of a needle.

Another problem with images and MSNTV: we can't view sources of pages, unless we go to another tool website to read the details or source codes.

I had no idea that image was as large as the Sears Tower. I should have looked it up at an online source viewer, at http://webscissors.com , etc.

But it's been...oh, two years, maybe since I messed with images much larger than my wiggle worms.

I also forget to add width and height dimensions into my HTML coding, which drives some computers crazy.

I'm having to relearn HTML. Gag. But I'll get it.

I went to Image Magick http://magick.net4tv.com/ and did the following: resized, reduced colors, dithered and otherwize beat to death that hidious monster.

I THINK I've reduced it to 1/4 its original size. It's still big, but you don't have to rent an extra apartment for it to live in anymore.

Does it load better now, or do you all still want me tarred and feathered?

MSNTV is the dangedest contraption ever plugged into a wall!

Bear with me. I've only recently ventured out to communicate with the puter world, and I still think like a webtv user.

today, I finally gave up on bigfoot and went to subtledomains.com to buy a domain name.

Slick as poop thru a goose: twenty bucks for 2 years, they take paypal...what could go wrong?

as SOON as the payment cleared, I was directed back to subtledomains, with a message that said they had NOT (emphasis theirs) registered my domain name and that they had refused the payment.

Well, PayPal says they got paid. Money's gone from my account.

So.....fifty thousand unanswered emails to subtledomain later, I get a ONE SENTENCE REPLY, saying my domain is in my control panel.

MSNTVs don't HAVE control panels!

So, I wrote them and told them. No reply yet.

I also wrote Bert, over at zbox.com, to see if he could put it in HIS control panel, of HIS computer.

AAAAAAAAAUUUUUUUUUURRRRRRRRGH!

and now, cuz my money's tied up, I CAN'T GO ANYWHERE ELSE!

Darn http://bigfoot.com is supposed to register my domain name, but their form isn't compatible with msntv. AND even before they've finished their job, they've SOLD MY EMAIL ADDRESS and I'm getting pelted with SPAM!

And they've only answered my pleas for help with a bot generated form letter.

Jerks!

They offer 1st year registration for five bucks. But, frankly, I think I'd rather pay twice that to a real company.

I'll give them half of today to get their act together, and then I'm registering with a different service.

Everybody wants your money; nobody wants to provide the services or goods they advertise! grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Spam Heads

OK: I wrote to spam@webtv.net and asked WHY they couldn't filter out huge emails from dubious email services, since they're worms and viruses. Never got a reply, of course. Today, I saw this in MSNTV Propoganda Central:

To help decrease the amount of unwanted mail ("spam") you get, soon we will begin discarding e-mails that contain these file types: .exe, .pif, .bat, .scr, and .com.

Files with these extensions often contain viruses or are attached to spam and are meant for a personal computer. They have no purpose or use on MSN TV. Except for discarding these e-mails, this change to our e-mail service should not interfere with delivery of your other e-mail messages.

Except, you see, SOME of us MSNTV users have lives BEYOND the firewall, and actually correspond with ~gasp~ COMPUTER USERS, some of whom don't REALIZE MSNTV can't view such files.

So, instead of scanning large emails from KNOWN SPAM OUTLETS ONLY, you're going to block ALL such emails. That means, I'll be missing some important correspondence.

As I already said, I embed with a clickable link, back to my source. I don't just use a graphic (without permission) without giving credit and access to information about its source. Therefore, I am not stealing bandwidth; I'm promoting the web sites from which I'm embedding.

This is necessary for two reasons:

First, my MSNTV has no hard drive and I can not up- or download anything from it. I can transload, from one online source to another. Period.

I build web pages at: AngelFire, GeoCities, WTV-Zone and 250Free. Three of those hosts block sound and image files from being useful on any but their own web pages. So, even though I have accounts there, stored images/sound files won't function anywhere else. In addition, GeoCities has blocked FTP, so I can't even transload to them any more.

Secondly, I am extremely (by US standards) low income. That's why I'm using an MSNTV unit, rather than a computer. So I can't afford to webster pages at any hosts which are not free.

WTV-Zone is my only option. But my account there is under a different user name, and I don't use files from there under rriverstone (MSNTV people can't have anonymity, nick switching) to maintain the security of that WTV-Zone account.

In all incidences where I use embed tags, I do it to promote the site I'm embedding.

Once a post with an embed is archived, it will rarely be called up again, so won't permanently use bandwidth from the source.

Also, in the case of embedding whole web pages, that's a temporary thing. I place the web sites in my blog for a month, then I remove the post.

If I could do things differently, I would.

I like to display interesting content to my readers. I like to promote web pages which are interesting and useful.

I do not clutter up my blogs with cartoons, "cutesy" graphics, soundfiles (I have one, but the viewer must click on it) or other extraneous junk.

I know I can make my blogs visually interesting with text effects and tables. Both of these tricks make my blog visually interesting without slow loading.

Until I get a well paid writing job, and can pay for web site hosting, this is the best I can do.

And I ALWAYS credit my sources.

The one exception is the cat with the rifle on my http://rriverstone.blogspot.com/ blog,and that was a gift from my friend, Norma. It's not associated with a web site; it's stored in her image files, at one of her web hosting sites.

It's cool. I just wanted to make it clear that I try to be as responsible as possible with the limitations of this appliance.

Many MSNTV users are not. It's not their faults. Nobody told them different.

MSNTV offered tutorials to users on how to build HTML signatures for email and posting in groups.

They actually TOLD people how to direct link images. Now, we CAN use our own, transloaded images. And we now have our own web page hosting, PageBuilder. But it has awkward limitations (somewhere on my http://rriverstone.blogspot.com/ blog, you will find, "county fair foods;" that's a PageBuilder page. It uses templates. It's a pain! It was designed for use by people with no familiarity with HTML webstering. It loads slow.

People also direct link sound files. PageBuilder has no application for transloading sound files to it. Images, yes.

So, we MSNTV users have been stealing bandwidth from day one!

It was only OTHER USERS who began informing the rest that bandwidth theft was a serious issue, and must be avoided. They wrote tutorials and tools to assist MSNTV users in NOT stealing bandwidth!

We have a BAD reputation in the online community. I'm sensitive to that. I was concerned that someone reading this thread would see my post as just another example of what a flaky bunch of bumpkins MSNTV users really are! LOL

Using a combination of JavaScript and CSS you can have the background color of a table cell or whole row (or even the whole table) change color when a visitor places their cursor over it.

Why would you want to do that? You can have a row or column highlight when the cursor is on it to make it easier to read data across the table - or just for fun!

Here's the code you'd place in the HEAD section of your page:

That's the CSS part, below is a sample table that shows you how to add the JavaScript that makes the background color change. I've coded the change into the first row. I ran 5 newsgroups: my "kitchen table" group, antiwar, skepticism, Unitarian Universalism/agnosticism, philosophy.

After the crap I just went through on the "Church" of the larger fellowship UUA email list (see Daily Rogi), I decided to unsubscribe from all UUA.org email lists. This is difficult to do, and each list must be unsubscribed, individually.

Since my CLF experiences, and my recent experiences with the AUUF locally (see Hood Life), and my PAST experiences with other UUA congregations have been so PROFOUNDLY dehumanizing, I made a radical decision.

I decided to delete my MSNTV username, Unitarian_Universalist@webtv.net. That way, I won't have to bother with unsubscribing. Besides, nobody was posting to that newsgroup, anyway.

When I went into the "change users" portion of my account, I looked at my other user names. I thought about the newsgroups I've been operating.

I thought how few people actually post in ANY of them. I thought how much I've been harrassed, trolled, flamed, stalked, email bombed and otherwise not only not acknowledged for my hard work, but how much I've been persecuted for it.

I deleted ALL my user names, except rriverstone.

Apparantly, the issues which I find most important in life matter little, if anything, to other MSNTV subscribers.

I hung in there for months, years. I was hoping some lost souls might wander in and form communications.

When I look at alt.discuss, I see gossip, pornography, flaming, remedial humor and Jesus are the most "popular" groups.

I had hoped to provide some alternative space. But it's not wanted; it's not welcomed. It's resented.

So, all my user names dealing with intelligent discussion are deleted.

No more.

Why I MISS WebTV

MSNTV was neither created nor developed by MSN.

It was developed as WebTV: an inexpensive, efficient and user-friendly appliance for people to access the internet, send/receive email, etc. without the expense and hassles of owning a computer. No software to buy. No virus to detect. No hacker attacks. No thick manuels. No secondary hardware to buy. It would be upgraded on a regular basis. All memory would be stored in the network. Simple, cheap, excessible, efficient, user friendly

The problems started when WebTV was sold to MSN. MSN uses we subscribers as "guinea pigs" to test the hardware. MSN doesn't give a damn about us, and we know it. We problem solve and provide support to each other. We seldom even ASK for support from MSN. Why bother? Their Customer Support Reps (CSRs) are poorly trained and unfamiliar with the appliance. They make suggestions for remedial fixes which don't even apply to the problems customers present.

Our sole purpose in life is for demographics. They sell our cookied info.

Recently, new MSNTV commercials have appeared in select areas. There is talk, even from what little corporate propoganda to which we are privy, of a new device, currently in product testing.

If this new devise is cost prohibitive and also renders my current appliance obsolete, I will no longer have internet access. This goes for thousands of my fellow subscribers.

One can, on occasion, currently purchase several MSNTV box models on Ebay for $1-50 us.

Why did MSN buy WebTV, then, if they have no interest in the subscriber base?

Can you say "X Box?" They've cannibalized the LBB hardware for their little gaming toy.

WebTV was never designed to replace computers; it was designed because there's a lot of extraneous stuff about computers that is expensive and unnecessary to internet access.

As with many revolutionary ideas, this one has been derided, mocked and sneered at since its inception. Had it caught on, computer manufacturers and SOFT WARE DEVELOPERS (such as MSN, for instance????) would necessarily find themselves scrambling, just to remain in business.

That's why we old timers on WebTV don't CALL it MSNTV, except for clarification. We resent the neglect, abuse and stupidity we've endured at the hands of MSN. We feel no loyalty to them. And we wish WebTV had never been sold! :evil: :evil:

MSNTV offers assistance to webmasters on how to build MSNTV friendly sites. I'll post about that in case anybody's interested.

We webbies r kinda scared of interacting with puter users. We got a very hostile reception when we got to usenet! For one thing, we can post HTML signatures. THAT wasn't appreciated! We can send sigs in email, too...many ISPs don't see them, or they jam up the works.

I'm still getting accustomed to posting w/out my sig in some email groups. I don't EVEN go to usenet; we LBB ppl can't post with fake names! Spam bots and psychopaths torment us!!

We have our own usenet, behind the MSNTV firewall: alt.discuss. YOU puters can't see it! :-P

We're just now starting to blog. But I gotta say, the incompatibility issues are troublesome. IF a blog site offered: full FTP and a TRANSLOADER (transloader moves images, sound files, etc from one online site to another...as opposed to up- and downloading, which we can't do) IF somebody offered those, Webbies would FLOCK to bloggers! We could make photo albums, do geneology, have group blogs, show off our MSNTV only web arts, etc.

Blogging would b PERFECT for webbies!

Another problem with alt.discuss. is that they purge posts after 30 days. With blogs, we could KEEP our conversations and links!

Virus Masquerade as MSN Patch

If you get an email about microsoft security, don't open it! It's a virus. Transparent graphics on the email could read your email address and send even more!

If you want to know if it's a real email from MSN or the virus, click on your "clean up" function. Read how large of a percentage of space the email takes. It should be .10 or less, generally 1.0 to be generous. If it's about 6-7%, it's a virus.

Just delete it, unopened. And delete all of them from your "discarded" mail, too. No sense letting it take up space in your email folders.

DON'T PANIC! We've been thru WORSE!
What's really scary about these is: they're using MSN stationary and some MSN links, to make them look legit.

I TRIED bouncing for headers and forwarding them to abuse@ the hosts from which they came. They were rejected because they were too large!

So, the outfits who are unwittingly SENDING these virus emails won't RECEIVE them. They'll never know they're aiding and abetting this!

It took approxemately 10 minutes per email to bounce/forward them to myself and then to send them on to various abuse@ addresses.

I gave up after the 3rd one. I have a few more this morning.

I only got a total of about 10 of these, compared to other MSNTV users' 20 or 30, but the day is young.

But, each one of these virus spams is taking up 7-10% of my mail box!

I've almost completely stopped using my @webtv.net address for anything. I'm using yahoo mail. The spam filters work.

I'd use hotmail or msn or whatever, but, after 2 years of trying, I can NOT get anybody to straighten out my passport and password so I can get IN to my hotmail account! They WON't FIX IT!

Times like these, I'm particularly angry about being treated like a brain-damaged child by people I'm PAYING to provide me with internet service!

She is looking at our "home" page.

Note how tiny the keyboard is. The keyboard is wireless. I never sit at a desk. I lay on the sofa, with a breakfast-in-bed tray on my lap, with the keyboard on it.
Lots of people use their coffee tables. Many sit in recliner chairs. We have a reputation of being internet "couch potatoes."

It also has a remote control "wand." With it, one can type on a virtual, on-screen "keyboard," but it's a real PAIN!

The appliance is that black box, to your left of the television.

That model is a "plus" unit. It can record from your VCR. You can watch tv in a small picture inside the larger picture of the internet. It can remind you when your favorite programs are coming on, and even change channels. You can make video captures with a vid. camera with it and .wav file sound recordings to send in email.

Mine is a "classic" model. It's about 1/2 the size of the one pictured there. It allows internet access only.

You plug either into the: phone, electric outlet and television.

You can take it on vacations easily; it will hunt a local access number, once you tell it you've "moved."

It costs about 2-5 bags of groceries per month, for all you international types. Or 1/17th of my monthly rent.

I can do almost anything online a computer can do. I cannot up- nor download software. The software programs are stored on the network.
This means, my account is very secure: it can't be hacked and I can't catch viruses. I did catch the "SoBig" worm, though.

But that does mean I'm at the whim of the network for software upgrades, which are too often "buggy" for awhile.

You can be online 10 minutes after you get it out of the box. It has an onscreen tutorial.

You use any television as the monitor.

I love this stupid thing!

The astronomy alt.discuss group is concerned that a huge headline about "UFOs" appears on our MSNTV home page. When one clicks the link, one is directed to a "Things To Try" page which says,

"Find life out there
Get the latest UFO news in UFO Roundup.
Report your sightings to the National UFO Reporting Center.
Read true accounts [sic] of individuals abducted by UFOs."

My reply:

Yellow journalism is a much-loved tradition in this country; how DARE you question it? :)

What's more scary is the crap in the "try new things" section of the home page, or whatever they call it. They suggest a web site on astrology, not astronomy, for instance. 'course, most people, and a substantial population of journalists, don't know the difference between the two.

If we're all worrying about: PlanetX, Armagedon, psychics, astrology, UFOs, etc, we won't NOTICE reality!

Bush wants $87 billion more for his superbowl in Iraq. That's on top of $150± billion already spent. The World Trade Center cost a measly billion.

But we're worrying about nonexistant planets and lil grey guys. It's the big WHITE guys who should SCARE us! LOL

Someone said, "evolution is stupid." Of course, Raoul, 4ize and I tend to jump like ducks on June bugs at such statements.

Raoul said that, if that poster could answer some basic Chemistry questions, the conversation on how reproduction/replication developed could continue. The questions involved chemical bonds & their strength and composition. They also involved the composition and configuration of DNA.

So, I hit the search engines and posted websites that had the answers.

Then, I wrote this:

I want to publicly state, for the record that I never studied chemistry.

The heirarchy of public "education" requires one to complete at least Calculus before one can take a Chemistry class.

I am slightly dyslexic and EXTREMELY math-phobic. I barely passed basic Algebra, and that wasn't until College.

The only Chemistry I ever picked up came from PBS science shows and the like. "Accidental" Chemistry.

So, until Raoul posted these questions, I never knew what Chemical Bonds, et al, even WERE!

But, with my webtv and a search engine, I LEARNED the basics in less than 20 minutes!

This is the value of this little "toy" we have on top of our television sets.

Sure, we can use this appliance to gossip, spread rumors, harrass people, masturbate and play games. One doesn't need an internet-ready appliance to do those; small people have done it for eons. The appliance just makes it possible to do this sort of petty damage on a global scale.

But this appliance can take one to the Smithsonian Institute, NASA, The Library of Alexandria, the Louvre, Julia Childs' kitchen, the foot paths of Chiapas.

It can take us back in time to the Tower of Babel, the Twin Towers, the Roman Coleseum, Stonehenge, the building of The Great Wall Of China, the Suez Canal, the Mayan pyramids, the Big Bang.

It can take us into great minds like Einstein, Schweitzer, Ghandi, Dr. King, Van Gogh, Beethoven, da Vinci.

This appliance is a transporter. We start out on our sofas in our nondescript homes and travel the depth and breadth of the Universe.

And it's not a one-way conversation, like regular TV, radio, publishing. We can publish blogs, ezines, web pages, Table- and Audioscope art.

We can be part of the global conversation.

Or, we can use this appliance to gossip, spread rumors, harrass people, masturbate and play games.

I am involved in a social institution which often posts .pdfs from its web site.

I have discovered a wonderful trick.

Once I stumble on one of their .pdfs, I type enough key words into Google that it calls up.

Google has a .pdf to .html converter. It looks terrible, generally.

So, I ccp their results and email it to myself, without an email signature.

I was able to read an entire history of this organization's 10-year involvement with Romania by this method!

Totally legible. A whopper email: 3%, but well worth it!

I'm constantly in touch with this organization, so a fast fix is very useful.

Fortunately, my PayPal acc't. credited me with the payment and I was able to transfer it into my bank account!

I deal with an unscrupulous property mgmt. company whose primary goal in life is to squeeze as much blood out of their tenants as possible.

I was desperate to pay my rent before I could incur a late fee.

I have mailed a check to the company, accompanied by a letter requesting they not deposit the check before Tuesday, unless I call them to let them know the funds have transferred early.

I included a copy of my PayPal email, announcing that the transfer has been made.

I made the mistake, the last time I moved, of taking a Direct Deposit Advance of a month's income. I needed it for deposits, etc.

I've had to take advances every month since to pay rent. The fees cost me $500� per year.

My new employer advanced me $500., so I'd no longer have to make Advances.

The money cleared at 10am today. That will save me almost $40 for just this month.

The less I have to subsidize my slum lord AND my predatory lender bank, the happier I'll be!

Thank you for your suggestions. I'd thought of that, myself.

I can ALMOST walk to the library from here.

Secure Sight Online Banking

Since the 2.8.1 upgrade, someone's online banking site has gotten funny. The person asked about another bank, at which I have an account.

I only got the upgrade about 2 weeks ago.

I was doing fine with my bank.

This morning, I went to check my acc't. history and things went funny.

First, it didn't recognize my username and password (entered correctly; I checked) and sent me to a form field to enter them again.
I entered again and was taken to a page I'd never seen before: just my account balance.

Usually, there's an options menu, directly below the balance and I go to "acc't. history" to see transaction activities.

The menu was gone.

I had to go to the bottom of the page.

There was a link labeled "home," or some such (I'll have to look it up; I've forgotten). It was such a generic name, I didn't know if it would take me to MY home at the bank, or to the bank's home page, from which I'd have to search around to get my acc't. history.

FORTUNATELY, it took me to my acc't. home page. I was able to access my acct. history from there. The page was the one to which I'm usually directed after logging in.

Such changes in the appearance of one's bank acc't. are, needless to say, slightly alarming: things aren't where they were yesterday; I didn't know why, and I was a bit flustered, trying to access the info I needed. Makes it easy for the customers to make unnecessary mistakes in the confusion.

But then, this bank has never made "user friendly" banking a priority, especially for us LBB folk.

So far, the site is accessible to me, as little as I use it, anyway. My priority is usually to check acc't. history to verify that my transactions are recorded and my balance reflects them.

The clumsiness with the log on was quite alarming. A real cliff-hanger: will I have access to my account or not? as I wait for their secure site machinary to kick in.

I'm too old for this.

I forgot: after they finally accepted my username and password, I was directed, not directly to my account, but to an extra page (similar to those PayPal has been using recently). It was a tutorial-type page, instructing me in a security function re: username/password and telling me what I would need to click to make changes in those. I clicked "continue" and was taken to that new "front" page of my acc't w/out the usual menu.

It really was all unnecessarily alarming.

Someone posted that, when they hit their "back" button, it skips the most recent page prior and goes back further. It's been a problem for WAY too long!

I use my email sig as an "f-key." I use the "map" link to get to my "site map," to my "newgroups" page.

That's all the surfing I've done since changing users, and 1/2 is missing from my cache: 2 of 3 geocities pages of mine, a ng, and write email!

Each of them has a "peer" page that DOES show in my cache.

Logic has NOTHING to do with MSNTV!

Angela has invented a tool by which MSNTV users can actually ~gasp~ easily search for charters of alt.discuss groups!

She had asked why MSNTV couldn't simply add a link to a group's charter on the sidebar of each group. The answer was that there is no one in Develoment who could be spared.

It's what, a ten minute job for a corporate super geek; five minutes for us lowly subscribers (if we could hack into the system)!

Isn't it sad that, because posters can't find charters, they often offend ngs out of simple ignorance?

Isn't it sad that a simple chore, such as adding a "charter" link to the sidebar, which would take mere minutes goes undone?

And isn't it wonderful that it is we, the USERS of the appliance, who PAY for the "priviledge," invent the fixes, tools, works-around and magic that makes this LBB more functional and user-friendly?

Isn't it sad we're not only not paid for it, but are almost always ignored by the company we're paying?

Now, if you could ONLY figure out the real identities of nick switchers, this medium of alt.discuss would be ALMOST civilized!

Email Hell

I only got ONE of 20 daily ezines today! Thot it was cuz it's Sunday, but now that you mention it, I haven't been getting several of them for some time now.

And my friends on AOL and I have been having extreme trouble for a year now: we are not getting each other's emails! I can't reply to one friend; I have to start a "fresh" email to reply to him. He HAS to reply to me; I can't receive "fresh" emails from him!

The other day, it took 20 minutes for me to receive 4 emails I sent myself!

I'm starting to feel like an orphan!

I do all my work from an MSNTV...webtv. I am a webster, so I design web sites. I do a form of MSNTV art, called Table Art. I designed all my articles for net4tv.com Voice.
When we discovered we could place HTML code in our email signatures, we began teaching ourselves, and each other, HTML and other web design languages.

We have invented two art forms, specific to MSNTV only. It SHOULD be on exhibit at the Museum of Modern Art! SERIOUSLY! It is a fabulous use of our medium, unique in history. Computers can't produce our art forms, nor even see them! We "hacked" the underpinnings of MSNTV, exploited some idiosyncrasies, and created something brand new in digital art.
We have had a "brain drain" in recent years.

Our best artists, hackers and tweakers are almost all on computers now. Many have discontinued their MSNTV subscriptions. But almost all still maintain friendly, supportive relationships with MSNTV subscribers. I still chat, email, etc. with former subscribers regularly. They still provide "help" and other websites online.

I do miss having the "old gang" behind the MSNTV firewall. They're not in the HTML newsgroups for MSNTV only any more, so I don't see them every day. I see them on Sundays, in a chat room.

We are a tight community. We have formed lifetime friendships, even marriages, as a result of MSNTV. We're loyal to each other.

It's unique: we come from all walks of life, yet we support each other and help each other.

Everything I've learned about: internet networking, web site design, online resources, tools, etc I have learned from my fellows on MSNTV units.

I still don't have an operating computer!
